Note that we do make available
many packages which do not meet our criteria of being free. These are
distributed in the contrib area or the non-free
area; see the Debian FAQ, under
``The Debian FTP archives''.

After installation you can enable Boot Sector protection if you want. There is no need to tamper with Master Boot Record (MBR) after the boot manager has been set up. This offers no additional security in Linux but if you also do Windows it may prevent a catastrophe.
Note that kerneld is
replaced by kmod and you have to select ``Kernel module
loader'' instead. The Linux 2.2 kernel is not fully supported by
Debian ; see Using the Linux 2.2 Kernel with Debian, Section 8.5 for details and
workarounds.
